Parent and child locations
There are two main types of locations in Fishbowl Drive:
- Parent locations
- Child locations
This describes the relationship between two locations, such as a warehouse and an aisle within that warehouse. In this situation, the warehouse is a parent location, and the aisle is a child location. However, that aisle can also be a parent in relation to the shelves within it. Those shelves would also be parent locations to the bins within them.
Most of the locations you create in Fishbowl Drive will fall under both of these types at some point.
When you click CREATE NEW in the action bar on the main page of the Locations module, it brings up a page where you can add information about the new location. It requires a Name and Type, which can be:
- Stock
- Shipping
- Receiving
- Locked
After you fill in those fields, you’ll notice that there is a Location Path field. This is where you can indicate if the location you’re creating is a parent or child. If it’s a parent, you won’t enter anything in this field. That is often the case when you create a warehouse or other large location that will contain many child locations within it.
However, if you are creating a receiving bay, QA department, office, or other child location, click the Location Path field and select one of the options in the dropdown menu. Then you can click the Use Parent Address checkbox to automatically fill in the address information in that section.
Once you save a parent or child location, you will be able to find it in the Location Path dropdown menu when you create another child location that you want to add under that existing location.
