  • To import or export UOMs, click the More Icon Button.png More button near the top-right corner of the module.
  • UOM conversions can be entered by opening any UOM and then clicking the FBO New Icon Button.png Add New Conversion button.
  • To import uoms from a spreadsheet or CSV file, click the More Icon Button.png More button at the top of the item list and choose Import UOMs.
  • To create a template file with the correct column headers, click Export UOMs.
  • The suggested order of CSV imports for new databases can be found here.
  • For a step-by-step tutorial on working with CSV files, check out the CSV video here.
  • Below is a list of the CSV columns. All column headers are required. Columns with an asterisk must contain data.
    • Uom-Name* - The name of a unit of measure.
    • Uom-Description - A brief explanation of what a unit of measure is.
    • Uom-Abbreviation* - The shortened version of a unit of measure’s name, usually two characters in length.
    • Uom-DefaultFlag* - True/False if it is the default unit of measure.

Main section

The main section of the UOMs module has information about each unit of measure you have created. This information is found under the following column headers:

Action bar

The action bar in the main page of the UOMs module contains two buttons:

  • More - The More Icon Button.png More button displays three options when you click it:
    • Import UOMs - Use an Excel spreadsheet to upload UOMs into this module, as noted above.
    • Export UOMs - Download a CSV file containing all of the information about your UOMs. This enables you to generate a template for importing UOMs, too, as noted above.
    • Change Dates - This brings up two options you can change the date in the header to:
      • Date Created - A permanent marker that denotes when a UOM was first saved and added to the system.
      • Date Last Modified - A changeable marker that denotes the most-recent date that a UOM was edited by a user.
  • ADD NEW - Launches the New UOM page to create a new one.

How to create a UOM

Clicking the ADD NEW button on the right side of the action bar in the main page of the UOMs module brings up the New UOM page. There are four fields to fill out, two of which are required, as noted by an asterisk:

  • Name* - A textbox to enter the full name of the UOM, e.g., Inch, Foot, Minute, Hour, etc. The name cannot be the same as any other UOM’s name that you have previously saved. If you attempt to save a new UOM with the same name as an existing UOM, you will receive an error message.
  • Abbreviation* - A textbox to enter the shortened version of the UOM’s name, e.g., in, ft, min, hr, etc. It can be a single character or several characters. It’s best to keep it to three or fewer characters. Like the Name, if you attempt to save a new UOM with the same abbreviation as an existing UOM, you will receive an error message.
  • Default - A checkbox that makes this UOM the default one when you create a new item in the Items module.
  • Description - A textbox to enter a brief explanation of the UOM. This can be the same as the description of an existing UOM, and it won’t cause an error.

You can also edit a UOM by clicking its line from the main page of the UOMs module.

Conversions

The Conversions section appears under the four main fields. Click Add New Conversion to create a line with the following fields, both of which are required:

  • Quantity* - A textbox to enter the number of units that make up a single unit of this UOM.
  • Unit* - A textbox to enter the UOM that is connected to the number of units that are being converted into this UOM.

Here are some examples: 12 Inches per 1 Foot, 60 Minutes per 1 Hour, etc.

Click the icon to the right of a conversion to delete it. A message will pop up asking you to confirm your choice to delete it. Click the red DELETE button to complete this process.

These conversions will appear in the Items module, and they can be modified on a per-item basis without affecting these conversions in the UOMs module.

Action bar in a UOM

These buttons are in the action bar of a UOM:

  • SAVE - Record your changes to the UOM and remain in it to continue making modifications.
  • SAVE AND CLOSE - Record your changes to the UOM and return to the main page of the UOMs module.
  • DELETE - Erase the UOM from the UOMs module. This only appears once a UOM has been saved. It will not be in a new UOM. We explain more about this button in the section below.
  • X - This closes the UOM and returns you to the main page of the UOMs module without saving your changes. If you have unsaved changes, a message will pop up asking if you want to save them before leaving.

How to delete a UOM

You can’t delete a UOM from the main section of the UOMs module. You can only do that by opening a UOM and then clicking the DELETE button in its action bar. Clicking this button brings up a message asking you to confirm your decision. Click the red DELETE button to complete this process.

In order to delete a UOM, it can’t be used in connection with any of your items. If even a single item uses the UOM, you won’t be able to delete it. An error message will appear. You will need to change the item’s UOM to something else to delete the UOM.
